No Soggy Bottoms: Ilkley Musical Theatre Society Is Looking for Its Next Star Bakers

Can you sing, act and maintain your composure when somebody mentions an underproved focaccia? Ilkley Musical Theatre Society is holding auditions for its spring 2027 production of The Great British Bake Off Musical

MagNorth is all about those moments when theatre holds a mirror up to society. (Don't worry...we're not about to deconstruct Alice Birch's Revolt.)

There are other moments when it puts on an apron, preheats the oven and sings passionately about pastry. Ilkley Musical Theatre Society is preparing to pitch its tent for its spring 2027 production of The Great British Bake Off Musical - and is now looking for performers capable of bringing Britain’s most emotionally charged baked goods to the stage.

Auditions take place on Sunday 6 September 2026, with the production running from 28 April to 1 May 2027.

Between those dates lie several months of rehearsals, character development, choreography and, presumably, serious discussions about whether a cake can ever truly be worth a handshake.

Based on the television phenomenon that taught the nation to fear the words “style over substance”, the musical follows a group of amateur bakers as they enter that most unforgiving of theatrical spaces: the Bake Off tent.

There will be ambition. There will be friendship. There will be personal revelations expressed through flour. Someone in Addingham will fall out with someone from Ben Rhydding.

And unless the society has taken considerable liberties with the source material, there will almost certainly be at least one moment when an apparently stable structure collapses under pressure. (And we don't mean Hermione's Pimms-infused meltdown in Hospitality at the Lexus Ilkley Open earlier this month.)

Who kneads to audition?

Ilkley Musical Theatre Society is inviting expressions of interest for the following roles:

Babs, Ben, Dezza, Francesca, Gemma, Hassan, Izzy and Russell.

Also required are presenters Jim and Kim; Pam Lee; Phil Hollinghurst; and Lily.

Taken together, the characters represent the familiar and irresistible Bake Off mixture of personalities: people who arrive carrying carefully labelled containers, complicated personal histories and the sincere belief that their future happiness may depend upon a successful crème pâtissière.

A small ensemble will also appear in the production, with separate audition details due to be announced during July.

We cannot yet confirm whether the ensemble will portray additional bakers, members of the production team or a highly disciplined formation of anthropomorphic éclairs.

A demanding theatrical recipe

Rehearsals will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

That is a sizeable commitment, but musical theatre has never been built by people unwilling to sacrifice the occasional quiet evening in pursuit of a perfectly timed key change.

The show will require performers who can sing, act and create convincing emotional lives beneath bunting - so the search area does include Silsden and the posh bits of Skipton.

They may also need to master the peculiar dramatic tension of watching somebody slice into an object that has taken six hours to construct.

Interested performers are being asked to complete an online form. Audition materials and allocated times will then be distributed at the beginning of July.

Detailed character descriptions are available through Ilkley Musical Theatre Society’s Facebook page, allowing potential cast members to determine whether they are a Babs, a Ben or - in the most serious cases - a Phil Hollinghurst.

Community theatre rises again

Behind the playful premise is another ambitious undertaking from a society which continues to provide opportunities for local performers, musicians, backstage teams and audiences.

Producing a full-scale musical requires considerably more than finding several people willing to sing about cake.

There are sets to build, costumes to create, harmonies to learn, lights to rig, props to source and enough rehearsal tea to place significant strain upon the regional milk supply.

Community theatre brings all of those skills together. It gives experienced performers new challenges, allows newcomers to discover what they can do and creates the particular camaraderie that only develops among people who have repeatedly attempted the same dance routine on a Thursday night.

And The Great British Bake Off Musical should provide ample opportunities for both spectacle and silliness, while retaining the warmth, vulnerability and gentle eccentricity which made the original programme such an unlikely national institution.

So, if you have been waiting for a role combining musical theatre, competitive baking and the possibility of an emotionally significant spatula, the time has come.

Complete the audition form.

Learn the material.

Prepare your best impression of someone whose genoise has not risen but whose spirit remains unbroken.

The tent awaits.
