New Writing North, the Newcastle-based literary charity, has announced an exciting lineup for its winter programme, offering a wealth of opportunities for aspiring and emerging writers in the North of England. The programme spans career development workshops, paid placements, and industry events, cementing its commitment to fostering literary talent and promoting the joy of writing and reading.
Central to this season’s offerings is the Screenwriting Weekender, a must-attend event for TV and film writing enthusiasts, taking place from January 31 to February 2 at Live Theatre in Newcastle. Sponsored by North East Screen, this event features workshops, networking opportunities, and talks from high-profile writers such as Peter Straughan (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) and Tony Schumacher (The Responder). Attendees will also meet industry insiders from organizations like the BBC, Creative UK, and Film Hub North.
The winter season also introduces the Emerging Creative Associates Programme, a six-month initiative beginning in March 2025. With applications open until January 27, this programme provides mentoring, training, and £1,500 in support for budding writers.
Aspiring professionals aged 18–25 can benefit from a Faber Publishing Open Day in London, with expenses covered, and five-day work placements at publishers and literary agencies, supported by £500 bursaries. Additionally, the Inkubator programme offers a £1,000 bursary to creatives exploring work with young people and communities.
For those honing their craft, the New Writing North Academy presents online workshops on topics such as crime fiction, screenwriting, and young adult novels. Locally, free Young Writers’ Groups are running across Cramlington, Gateshead, Newcastle, and other towns. Community workshops like “West End Writes” and “World Writes” find their new home at the John Marley Centre in Newcastle, engaging residents with multilingual and intergenerational writing activities.
The flagship Northern Writers’ Awards open for submissions from November 26, offering financial prizes, mentoring, and publishing opportunities. These free-to-enter awards cater to various genres, from poetry to television writing. Poets can join workshops led by award-winning poet Shash Trevett at Leeds Central Library starting January 22. Meanwhile, the Hachette Children’s Novel Awards, closing on January 13, aims to support two debut authors in children’s fiction with £3,000 bursaries and tailored mentorship.
Anna Disley, Executive Director of Programme and Impact at New Writing North, highlights the initiative’s mission: “Our far-ranging programme removes barriers and nurtures talent across our communities. Thanks to our partners, we’re able to offer transformative opportunities for emerging creatives.”
From Sunderland libraries hosting screenwriting taster sessions to support for debut novelists, the winter programme reflects New Writing North’s dedication to fostering creativity and collaboration across the region.
